iPad and the Environment

Apple takes a complete product life cycle approach to determining our environmental impact. Learn more

iPad embodies Apple's continuing environmental progress. It is designed with the following features to reduce environmental impact:

  • Mercury-free LCD display
  • Arsenic-free display glass
  • BFR-free
  • PVC-free
  • Recyclable aluminum enclosure
  1. Actual size and weight vary by configuration and manufacturing process.
  2. 1GB = 1 billion bytes; actual formatted capacity less.
  3. Cellular data plan is sold separately. The model you purchase is configured to work with a particular cellular network technology. Check with your carrier for compatibility and cellular data plan availability.
  4. FaceTime video calling requires a FaceTime-enabled device for the caller and recipient and a Wi-Fi connection. Availability over a cellular network depends on carrier policies; data charges may apply.
  5. Testing conducted by Apple in October 2012 using preproduction iPad (4th generation) units and software. Testing consisted of full battery discharge while performing each of the following tasks: video playback, audio playback, and Internet browsing using Wi-Fi or cellular data network. Video content was a repeated 2-hour 23-minute movie purchased from the iTunes Store. Audio content was a playlist of 358 unique songs, consisting of a combination of songs imported from CDs using iTunes (128-Kbps AAC encoding) and songs purchased from the iTunes Store (256-Kbps AAC encoding). Internet over Wi-Fi and cellular data network tests were conducted using dedicated web and mail servers, browsing snapshot versions of 20 popular web pages, and receiving mail once an hour. All settings were default except: Wi-Fi was associated with a network (except for Internet browsing over cellular data network); the Wi-Fi feature Ask to Join Networks and Auto-Brightness were turned off. Battery life depends on device settings, usage, and many other factors. Battery tests are conducted using specific iPad units; actual results may vary.
  6. Wireless broadband recommended; fees may apply.

Having studied all the iPad models and their characteristics, you can understand how the technologies for creating Tablet PCs have developed and progressed from 2010 to the present day.

After all, these famous gadgets, both a few years ago and now, are equipped with the most modern parts. And you can see development from them.

Moreover, some analysts suggest that iPads will eventually be the first to displace a significant part of desktop computers from the market, surpassing them, if not in power, then at least in mobility and ease of use.

iPad 1

The first iPad went on sale in 2010 and became a truly revolutionary gadget that received many technologies that other tablet PCs did not have at that time - an IPS display and a powerful gigahertz Apple A4 processor.

High operating speed, a screen with a diagonal of almost 10 inches and a capacious 6667 mAh battery made the iPad 1 popular.

However, it was still just an experimental model, with a number of shortcomings and shortcomings.

Among the disadvantages of the device were the relatively short operation time on a single charge - even such a battery was not enough for the large display and the resource-intensive iOS operating system.

In addition, the iPad was quite thick by the standards of other tablets and did not come with a camera, which is why it could not be used for video chatting.

But its body has rounded edges and stylish volume control buttons on the right side.

The developers’ original solution was the button for switching lock modes and screen orientation, which lights up green when turned on.

Another impressive characteristic is the tablet’s built-in memory, the maximum capacity of which was 64 GB.

Although the rather modest RAM parameters did not allow installing more modern versions on the tablet.

Technical specifications:

  • Screen size: 9.7 inches;
  • resolution: 768 x 1024;
  • processor: single-core, 1000 MHz;
  • cameras: none;
  • memory capacity: 256 MB RAM and from 16 to 64 GB built-in;
  • Battery capacity: 6667 mAh.

iPad 2

The next generation of iPad, which appeared in 2011, was more advanced and had many fewer shortcomings.

First of all, this concerned the amount of RAM that had increased to 512 MB - quite enough to run modern applications and install new operating systems.

In addition, the model received two cameras at once - the main one with 0.69 megapixels. and frontal with resolution (640 x 480), gyroscope and dual-core processor.

Most other characteristics, except for a more powerful processor, remained at the same level. Visually, the gadget was distinguished by the edging of the Home button, which matched the color of the body.

Tablet parameters:

  • screen: 1536x2048 pixels, 7.9 inches;
  • chipset: 2 cores, 1300 MHz;
  • cameras: 5 and 1.2 megapixels;
  • memory: RAM – 1 GB, ROM – 16, 64 and 128 GB;
  • Battery capacity: 6471 mAh.

Another plus is the most affordable price in the entire history of the series. The basic version of the model can be purchased for only $329.

At the same time, decent capabilities and quite affordable prices allow the gadgets to compete well with the top versions of other manufacturers.

And not only among fans of Apple products, but also among users who prefer high performance and modern technologies.

Apple decided to set a record this year by releasing three tablets at once - iPad 4, iPad Mini and iPad 3. And November became a month of double release for fans of the American company's products.

Let us immediately note that the new iPad has not received any serious modernization: it has a camera, display and design from the previous generation of tablets, and among the innovations we note - a chipset, a Lightning port, and a front-facing HD camera. Overall, this tablet is similar to the iPad 3 released in March, with a best-in-class Retina display plus a welcome boost of processing power. In addition, the new Lightning port will provide full compatibility with 5, which is very popular.

iPad 4 is not much different in appearance from iPad 3, that is, it is practically its clone. The small difference is the new Lightning port. Otherwise the tablets are identical.

The Retina display occupies almost the entire front surface of the device, above it is the front camera, and below it is the Home button. On the back side you can find the main camera and the device logo.

The aluminum body is, as always, elegant. In general, the tablet is very convenient to use. The assembly was done perfectly - no extraneous creaks or backlashes during operation.

The dimensions of the device are 241.2x185.7x9.4 mm, and the weight is 652 g. (662 g for the LTE version of the device).

Performance and Software

iPad 4 is based on a 2-core Apple A6X SoC clocked at 1.4 GHz, a 4-core PowerVR SGX554MP4 graphics chip and 1 GB of RAM. Thus, the new tablet has a more powerful processor than the iPad3, which, naturally, will allow it to easily work with the latest resource-intensive games with spectacular graphics. The device operates under the iOS 6 operating system.

Below we present several so-called synthetic tests that allow you to evaluate the characteristics of the new gadget.

And so, let's start with the Geekbench 2 test, in which our test subject was inferior to the Galaxy S III smartphone, but outperformed the 7- and 4-core Optimus G.

In the GLBenchmark 2.5 off-screen test, you can see a huge gap between the new graphics processor and the chips that were used in older Apple models, including the iPad Mini. Also, the iPad 4 is significantly ahead of the new Adreno 320 in the LG Optimus G.

In the GLBenchmark 2.5 on-screen test, graphics are reproduced in the “native” display resolution, and not in Full HD resolution, as in the GLBenchmark 2.5 off-screen test. Even though the Retina display has a higher resolution, the new tablet is still a winner.

Browser performance tests also confirmed the emerging trend. iPad 4 received top scores in JavaScript and plain HTML 5 performance tests.

Depending on the modification, the tablet has 16, 32 or 64 GB of permanent memory, which, like other Apple products, cannot be expanded using cards.

The device supports Wi-Fi, which is capable of delivering up to 150 Mbps, Bluetooth 4.0 + A2DP, GPS/A-GPS and 3G networks and LTE networks (depending on modification). But we note that LTE networks will not work in Russia, since communication standards do not match.

The gadget has Lightning and USB 2.0 ports.

The tablet comes pre-installed with the following software: browser, email client, audio and video players, integration with some social services (Twitter, Facebook, etc.), organizer and some other games and programs.

Screen

The tablet computer is equipped with a 9.7-inch touchscreen LED-backlit TFT Retina display with a resolution of 2048x1536 pixels (density 264 ppi) and color rendering of 16 million shades.

The screen is similar to that used in the iPad 3, so the image quality remains at the same high level - beautiful, natural colors, clear images, excellent sensitivity.

Camera

iPad 4 is equipped with a 5-megapixel main camera, which allows you to take photos with a maximum resolution of 2592x1944 pixels, with autofocus and geo-tagging functions, but without an LED flash. Photos taken with the tablet turn out very good for a 5-megapixel camera - natural colors, good clarity. Examples of photos can be seen below.

The camera allows you to record video in Full HD format at a frame rate of 30 per second. The video bitrate is about 18 Mbps, and for audio it is 65Kbps with a sampling frequency of 44 kHz for mono.

The video is smooth and details are visible quite well. The gadget provides video stabilization. Below is an example video.

The iPad 4 has a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera that can capture HD video for video calling.

Battery

The gadget received a lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 11560 mAh, which, according to the manufacturer, should be enough for 9 hours of battery life when using 3G communications and 720 hours of standby time. It takes about 6 hours to charge the device, which is achieved thanks to the increased power, since the iPad 3 took more than 7 hours to charge the battery.

Price

The cost of iPad 4 on the Russian market has not yet been announced. The price in the USA is as follows: $499 for the Wi-Fi only model and $629 for the model with support for LTE networks.

iPad 4 video review:

Shortly after the release of the iPad mini, Apple presented the full version of the improved fourth generation iPad. On October 23, 2012, a new iPad 4 model was released in San Jose. Users could not believe that the new version appeared so quickly and unexpectedly. Right on the eve of the New Year, on December 30, 2012, this model first appeared on the windows of Apple stores in Russia. Buyers were rushing off their feet to have time to buy a wonder for a New Year's gift to their loved ones.

Was the fourth generation tablet really that good and were the presented characteristics of the iPad 4 deservedly appreciated, because the cost of the maximum 128 GB version of the iPad 4 a1459 reached $929.

The fourth iPad did not undergo major changes, but of course it pleased us with some things: the display and front camera were updated, in which a graphics chip appeared, the battery capacity increased significantly, but the A6X processor remained at the level of two cores, but also underwent qualitative changes in terms of graphics .

The camera has not changed much, and the quality of video and photos remains the same, but I would like, of course, to be better. The appearance of the case appeared in black and white standard color options. The volumes of built-in flash memory on different models are presented with 16, 32, 64 and 128 gigabytes.

Since iPad 4 has not changed radically, the design is still standard: a metal aluminum case with the Home button habitually located on the front panel. The display is protected by a special protective glass. The standard 30-pin connector has been replaced with a more modern Lightining connector. The power button is located at the top right corner of the end of the case, and the volume reduction button is located at the right end of the side panel. The body has an installed light sensor and an accelerometer, which allows you to change the position of the screen depending on your viewing angle.

How the display has changed

As for display improvements, a glossy finish and IPS have appeared here. matrix. Retina screen resolution was 2048 x 1536 pixels with a diagonal of 9.7 inches. Good pixel content - 264 per inch allowed us to add brightness and contrast to the picture. The display copes well with the touchpad, but fingerprints are not visible, since the screen has an oleophobic coating. And the excellent video viewing angle allows you to watch videos comfortably several users. The same applies to the quality of photographs.

About camera improvements

This time, manufacturers have significantly updated not only the display, but also the front five-megapixel iSight camera, which received a 1.2-megapixel module with HD resolution, which improves playback quality. By the way, a flash has also been added, allowing you to take high-quality pictures at any time of the day. As a result, the photos received clarity and good contrast, while the camera focusing became better, and the video module records with a resolution of 1080p. The 1.2 MP front FaceTime HD camera now supports 720p video.

Updated processor

In contrast to the slightly changed design of the exterior, the interior of the iPad 4 has received truly decent characteristics. The new 32nm dual-core A6X processor chip, compatible with ARM, now operates at 1.4 GHz. Despite the addition of a quad-core graphics chip, the transitions became smoother and the interface became much more responsive. Now watching videos has become much more pleasant, the picture is presented in high HD quality, the browser works easily without freezing, pictures open instantly. In general, the performance of the iPad 4 has finally pleased many users.

Improved battery

Finally, the battery performance of the iPad 4 has reached its peak. After all, the more powerful a high-quality display, the more battery capacity is needed. Everyone will say that there is no pleasure in watching videos from an iPad connected to a charger. I still want autonomy in operation and independence from battery drain.

This time, manufacturers listened to the requests of fans of Apple technology and introduced a real super powerful 11560 mAh lithium-polymer battery into the iPad 4. Now you can watch video for up to 10 hours, audio will last up to 140 hours, and iPad 4 can last up to one month in standby mode. Simply incredible characteristics! In general, after a full charge, you can safely and vigorously use the device without worrying about its discharge for up to one week.

If we talk about statistics, the previous iPad 2 was 70% less autonomous. Therefore, in this case, we can confidently say that iPad 4 is a step forward in the production of Apple tablets. The only thing you need to remember is that the iPad also takes a long time to charge, so the charging time is somewhere around 7 hours.

Supported Communication

iPad 4 is available in two versions with different communication modules. In particular, the A1459 supports high-quality LTE, UMTS/HSPA and GSM/EDGE communication, and model A1460 supports the same types of communication, but additionally CDMA EV-DO connection. Both options have support for WI-FI and Bluetooth 4.0.

conclusions

To summarize, we can say that the fourth generation iPad does not catch the eye in appearance, but proves its respectability in practice, providing excellent video quality, a high-tech display, excellent battery life and powerful performance. Now, while browsing in Safari, you don’t notice the time, every now and then flipping through different pages, instantly opening pictures, watching videos for pleasure. Games generally have a good feel for the performance of the processor and from them we can clearly see that the processor and its auxiliary functions work perfectly.

If we talk about the shortcomings, it’s probably worth improving the camera a little, everyone loves to take selfies, and with a 1.2 GB camera the quality is still not the same, in short, there is still some work to be done. The front camera option is also low-pixel, because needs are growing, and competitors also have ample capabilities and good results.
